Channels and DMs
Channels
Group conversations for teams and topics:
- Public channels — Anyone can join
- Private channels — Invitation only
- Announcement channels — Only admins can post
Direct Messages (DMs)
One-on-one conversations with teammates.
Creating Channels
- Click + next to Channels
- Enter channel name
- Choose visibility:
- Public (anyone can find and join)
- Private (invite-only)
- Add description (optional)
- Invite initial members
Naming Conventions
- Use lowercase
- Use hyphens for spaces
- Be descriptive
Examples:
#engineering#product-launches#random#customer-support
Channel Groups
Organize channels into groups:
- Click Manage Groups
- Create a group (e.g., "Projects", "Teams")
- Drag channels into groups
- Collapse/expand groups in sidebar
Browsing Channels
Find channels to join:
- Click Browse Channels
- See all public channels
- Search by name or description
- Click Join to participate
Channel Settings
Configure each channel:

| Name | Channel identifier |
| Description | Purpose of channel |
| Visibility | Public or private |
| Notifications | Per-channel alerts |
| Pinned | Show at top of list |
Member Management
Adding Members
- Open channel
- Click member count
- Click Add Members
- Search and select
Removing Members
- Click member count
- Find the member
- Click Remove
