Sprints & Velocity

Sprints help teams work in focused iterations. Plan work, track velocity, and improve over time.

What is a Sprint?

A sprint is a fixed time period (usually 1-2 weeks) where the team commits to completing specific tasks.

Creating a Sprint

  1. Go to your project
  2. Click Sprints tab
  3. Click + New Sprint
  4. Set:
    • Sprint name (e.g., "Sprint 23")
    • Start date
    • End date
    • Sprint goal (optional)

Sprint Planning

Adding Tasks to Sprint

  1. Open a task
  2. Set the Sprint field
  3. Or drag tasks into the sprint on the board

Backlog vs Sprint

  • Backlog — Tasks not in any sprint (sprint = none)
  • Sprint — Tasks committed to the current iteration

Active Sprint

Only one sprint can be active at a time:

  1. Click Start Sprint on your planned sprint
  2. The sprint becomes active
  3. Team works on sprint tasks
  4. Progress tracked daily

Sprint Board

When viewing an active sprint:

  • Only sprint tasks appear on the board
  • Columns show task status
  • Drag to change status
  • See progress toward completion

Velocity Tracking

Velocity = tasks completed per sprint

Burndown Chart

Shows remaining work over time:

  • Ideal line — Linear decrease from committed to zero
  • Actual line — Real remaining tasks

If actual > ideal, you're behind schedule.

Sprint Report

After completing a sprint, view the report:

MetricDescription
CommittedTasks in sprint at start
CompletedTasks marked done
Carried OverIncomplete tasks
Completion Rate% of tasks done

Completing a Sprint

When a sprint ends:

  1. Click Complete Sprint
  2. Choose what to do with incomplete tasks:
    • Move to next sprint
    • Move to backlog
  3. Review sprint report
  4. Plan the next sprint

Sprint Best Practices

  • Consistent duration — Same length sprints for predictable velocity
  • Realistic commitment — Don't overload sprints
  • Daily check-ins — Quick status updates
  • Sprint goal — Clear objective beyond "complete tasks"
  • Retrospectives — Learn and improve each sprint
